Job Summary:The Blood Bank Technician is responsible for performing a variety of technical tasks related to the collection, testing, processing, and storage of blood and its components. The role ensures that blood products are safe, sufficient, and available for patients in need. This position requires strict adherence to safety and quality standards to ensure the well-being of donors and recipients.
Key Responsibilities:
Blood Collection and Processing:
- Perform venipuncture to collect blood from donors, ensuring a safe and comfortable process.
- Label and process blood specimens according to standard operating procedures.
- Separate blood into components (e.g., red cells, plasma, platelets) using specialized equipment.
Blood Testing:
- Conduct a range of tests on blood samples, including blood typing, antibody screening, and infectious disease testing.
- Verify the compatibility of blood and blood products for transfusion.
- Document and report test results accurately and promptly.
Quality Control and Compliance:
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Adhere to all regulatory standards and guidelines (e.g., FDA, AABB, CAP) for blood banking and transfusion services.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate temperature and storage conditions for blood products.
- Participate in internal and external quality control programs.
Inventory Management:
- Monitor blood product inventory levels to ensure availability for patient needs.
- Manage the storage and distribution of blood products to various departments or external facilities.
- Track expiration dates and ensure the proper disposal of expired or unusable products.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all blood banking activities, including donor information, test results, and inventory logs.
- Ensure confidentiality of donor and patient information in compliance with HIPAA and other regulations.
- Prepare and submit reports to management and regulatory bodies as required.
Safety and Infection Control:
- Follow strict protocols for infection control and safety to protect donors, patients, and staff.
- Handle biological samples and hazardous materials according to established safety procedures.
- Participate in regular safety drills and training sessions.
Donor Communication and Care:
- Provide pre-donation counseling and post-donation care to donors, including managing any adverse reactions.
- Educate donors on the donation process and the importance of blood donation.
- Address donor inquiries and concerns with professionalism and empathy.
Continuous Improvement:
- Participate in ongoing education and training to stay current with advancements in blood banking technology and practices.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and safety of blood bank operations.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Blood Bank Technologist (BB) by a recognized certifying agency (e.g., ASCP).
- 1-3 years of experience working in a blood bank or clinical laboratory.
- Proficiency in using laboratory equipment and blood bank software systems.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field.
- Experience in a hospital-based blood bank or apheresis.
- Knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., AABB, FDA) related to blood banking.
